Metal roof installation in Missouri

New construction is the easy case, and the one where the decisions are cheapest. There is no tear-off, no disposal and no rotten deck waiting under the old roof. What there is instead is a set of detailing choices you make once and live with.

Decide these before anything is fastened down

Metal is less forgiving of improvised detailing than shingles. A shingle roof absorbs a lot of approximation; a metal roof telegraphs it, both visually and in performance.

The house and the outbuildings are different jobs

On a Missouri property with a shop, a barn or a machine shed, it is normal for the house to get standing seam over a solid deck while the outbuildings get exposed-fastener panel over purlins. Both are metal roofs and they are built differently.

Some contractors do both comfortably and some are specialists in one. Ask which, and ask to see examples of the one you care about. Our farm and rural property page goes into the panel side, and the system comparison covers the tradeoff.

Who does the work

Missouri issues no state roofing licence, so on new construction your practical checks are the builder's own vetting plus the same three instruments that apply anywhere in the state.

What can you actually check, where you live?

Missouri does not license or register roofing contractors at the state level. There is no state credential to look up, so what you can verify depends on your address. Three cases cover the state.

Kansas City

Reported requirement, confirm with the city

Kansas City is reported to require a Residential Building Contractor licence, obtained by passing an International Code Council exam, through the city. If your address is inside the city limits, ask for that licence number and check it with the city directly.

City of St. Louis

Reported requirement, confirm with the city

The City of St. Louis is reported to require a Construction Industry Contractor graduated business licence. Note this applies to the city, which is a separate jurisdiction from St. Louis County. Confirm which one governs your address before you rely on it.

The rest of Missouri

No roofing-specific credential exists, which covers most of the state. A roofer working without one here is not doing anything wrong, so the useful move is to change instruments: verify insurance, the contract and the manufacturer certification instead.

Where no credential exists, check these instead

  • Current general liability and workers compensation certificates, sent to you directly by the insurance agent rather than forwarded by the contractor.
  • A written contract with a deck change-order process: what happens if the deck needs replacing, at what price per sheet, and whether you approve it in writing first.
  • Manufacturer certification for the exact panel system and gauge going on your house, not a brochure.
  • Local references with addresses you can drive past.

Status as of July 2026. The absence of a state licence was verified against the Revised Statutes of Missouri. Jurisdictions change requirements, so confirm with the issuing city before you rely on any of this.

Questions homeowners ask

Is new construction cheaper than a replacement?
The roofing itself often is, because there is no tear-off, no disposal and no deck surprise. What changes is that you are making every detailing decision from scratch rather than inheriting them, and those decisions are harder to revisit later.
What should be decided before the deck goes on?
Panel profile and gauge, the underlayment, how valleys and penetrations will be detailed, where any snow retention goes, and how the roof meets walls and chimneys. Metal is less forgiving of improvised detailing than shingles, and the cheapest time to get it right is before anything is fastened down.
Can the same crew do the house and the outbuildings?
Often, but they are genuinely different jobs. A house is usually standing seam over a solid deck; a shop or barn is frequently exposed-fastener panel over purlins. Some contractors do both well, some specialise. Ask directly rather than assuming, particularly if the outbuilding matters to you.
Does a new build need a permit for the roof?
Permitting on new construction is handled by the jurisdiction that governs the address and is usually part of the overall build permit rather than a separate roofing one. Your builder normally carries this. Confirm who is pulling what in writing rather than assuming.
